The Evoluent Essentials Full Featured Compact Keyboard is a lightweight and ultra-slim keyboard ideal for portable applications. Unlike most other 'compact' keyboards, the Evoluent Essentials features full-sized keycaps with a standard key pitch (i.e. the distance between each key cap) of 19.05 mm. Above the primary keys is a bank of twelve half-height hot keys for quick access to frequently used functions such as Cut, Copy, and Paste and to multimedia applications. The keyboard has a neutral (flat) profile and crisp, high quality scissor-switch membrane keyswitches. Raised dots and ridges help experienced typists identify important landmark keys by touch.
The low profile of this keyboard, just 0.4', means that the risk of wrist extension that can lead to chronic pain in the hands and wrists is almost eliminated. The compact narrow footprint also means that whether one positions their mouse to the left or the right, the distance being reached is very minimal, reducing the risk of problems associated with reaching for the mouse when using a standard fullsize keyboard.
Note: The Evoluent Essentials Full Featured Compact Keyboard offers the familiar row of numbers along the top, but does not have an embedded number pad or an embedded navigation layer. Those who need frequent access to numbers may wish to consider the Evoluent Reduced Reach Right-Handed Keyboard or a standalone numeric keypad to the workstation.

There is more than one way to use Blender without a number pad. One method is to use the View Menu. While this is easy to do, it’s not the most efficient way to work with Blender. Another method is to enable Blender’s Number Pad Emulation. This allows the number keys, at the top of the keyboard above the letter keys, to be used instead of the number pad. Number Pad Emulation

By default in Blender, the number keys on the number pad work differently than the number keys at the top of the keyboard. Specifically, the number keys on the number pad select the different views, which is a very handy feature. On the other hand, the number keys at the top of the keyboard select the Visible Layers. But by enabling Blender’s number pad emulation, the number keys on the top of the keyboard will work like a number pad.

Enabling Number Pad Emulation:

  1. From the File menu, select User Preferences.
  2. Click the Input tab.
  3. Put a check mark next to Emulate Numpad.
  4. Click Save User Settings to save the settings for the next time Blender opens.

After enabling number pad emulation, the number keys at the top of the keyboard will work as if they are number pad keys but they will no longer be able to select the Visible Layers. So as an alternative selection method, for the Visible Layers, you can use the buttons in the footer of the 3D view window.
